Invited Speakers
Knowledge Capture and The Web
Knowledge Capture has come along way in the last 40 years,
from labour intensive analysis of human problem solving protocols,
through the range of PSM-focussed dialogues which were achieved by
MORE/MOLE, SALT & OPAL systems in the 70s / 80s. Given the sheer quantity of
the information now available on the web it is not surprising that researchers
are developing adventurous new approaches to web-based Knowledge Capture.
Both of this year's invited speakers have made exciting contributions.
Firstly the many documents on the (semantic) web can potentially be exploited
by Text Mining/Information Extraction systems to produce information (if not
knowledge). But as our first invited speaker, Oren Etzioni (University of
Washington) argues there are many technical difficulties to be overcome, to make
this dream a reality. (The focus in his approach is to develop sophisticated
systems to tackle these key problems.) The second invited speaker, Luis von Ahn
(CMU), takes the complementary approach, namely he capitalizes on the
connectivity of the web, and uses people (many of them) to label images as
part of the highly intriguing ESP game.
Fascinating stuff! Please come along to this year's KCAP and hear about these important advances in our field.
